Frequently Asked Questions
And maybe some not-so-frequently-asked questions you haven't thought of.
I don't have my own rig... can i still join?
Our expeditions are designed for travelers with their own adventure rig, whether you own it or lease it.
If you're set on exploring Baja in a rental, we're happy to point you toward some trusted rental companies that offer self-guided tours. We'd recommend flying in the south of the peninsula and renting from there, as crossing the border in a rental can be tricky.
is 4x4 required?
Yes. Starting this season, all vehicles must have 4x4 or AWD, along with all-terrain tires. A pre-trip mechanical inspection is also required, and you can schedule one in San Diego with our partner, Agile Offroad.
You don't need a big lift, lockers, or a heavily modified overland build. We won't be doing any technical rock crawling or deep sand exploration. But once we're deep in the backcountry, trail conditions can change quickly, so this requirement helps keep the caravan moving safely and confidently.
I’ve never overlanded before — is this trip for me?
Absolutely. We’re here to make it easy. You just bring your sense of adventure — we handle routes, campsites, border paperwork, and those awkward conversations with police at checkpoints if your español is not-so-bueno.
What about safety? Isn't Mexico dangerous?
We travel in a small convoy, carry recovery gear, and use radios to stay connected. We also make sure you’ll have cell service or internet when needed. Plus, we know the safe places to fuel up, park, and explore. We never drive at night and always avoid sketchy areas. Mexico can get a bad rep from the news. Don't let fear stop you from following your heart. We feel safer wild camping in Baja than in the United States, and most of our overlanding friends will tell you the same thing.
is the trip exactly 23 days?
We recommend planning for 24–25 days just to be safe. Why?
We usually kick things off with a casual meetup at a campground in San Diego County the night before we cross the border. Think campfire, introductions, a trip briefing, and plenty of time to do last-minute van prep.
At the end of the expedition, keep an extra day in your schedule too. Baja doesn't always stick to the plan, and neither do we. Weather, road conditions, or discovering one more unforgettable spot might just earn an extra night under the stars. Around here, we don't rush the good stuff.
What this looks like in the real world for your trip calendar:
Expedition Enero: January 4th-28th
Expedition Febrero: February 1st-25th
Expedition Marzo: March 1st-25th
Can I bring my dog?
Yes! Baja is one of the most dog-friendly places you’ll ever visit, and our expeditions are designed around guests bringing their dogs. We are the self-proclaimed most dog-friendly caravan in Baja, after all! We’ll guide you through the necessary paperwork and vet requirements for the border. Paquito (my dog) is actually a rescue from Baja! If you want to adopt a dog, you'll have plenty of opportunities during this trip, as well!
What’s included in the price?
Guided route from start to finish, camping spots, permits, border document preparation, whale tour, and 10+ delicious group meals. You cover your own fuel, groceries, auto insurance, travel medical insurance, and any personal spending. We can help you organize auto and travel medical insurance through our partners.
How many people will be on the trip?
We keep it intimate — a maximum of 8 vehicles per expedition. That’s just enough rigs to create a lively caravan, share campfire stories, and swap road snacks… but small enough to stay flexible, slip into hidden campsites, and move as one tight-knit crew. By the end of the trip, it won’t feel like “a group” — it’ll feel like your people.
What if my vehicle breaks down?
We can’t perform miracles, but we do carry tools, basic spare parts, and recovery gear. Part of the mandatory paperwork to enter Mexico is Mexican auto insurance. We recommend Baja Bound — they are quick to respond and send help, when needed. We also require every vehicle to carry a full-sized spare tire.
What are the minimum camper requirements?
We take "Leave No Trace" seriously. To join a Baja Good expedition, every vehicle must be fully self-sufficient and equipped with:
A toilet (composting, cassette, or black-water system)
A kitchen or reliable way to cook meals
Fresh water storage
A comfortable place to sleep inside your vehicle
Our goal is to leave every campsite better than we found it, while making sure everyone can travel comfortably and responsibly in Baja's remote backcountry.
How much drinking water do I need to carry?
We recommend having a water tank that can carry at least 25 liters of drinking water. If you want to shower, consider carrying more or bringing a separate "shower" tank that only needs fresh (and not 100% filtered) water. If you can't carry this much, don't stress. We know the best water fill-up stations to stock up when you run out.
i'm vegan/vegetarian... will i survive?
Yep. I’ve survived (and thrived) all over Latin America as a vegan, and Baja is no different. Bring a few staples from home, eat your fill of rice and beans, and know that most taco stands can “veganize” with a little friendly explaining. You might even leave with new favorite plant-based Baja recipes. As we venture into more remote places in Baja, it can get a bit tricky to find anything other than fish. We can help you plan around this.
Do I really need insurance?
Yep, you sure do. Mexico requires auto insurance that actually covers you south of the border (your U.S. policy probably won’t fly), and we also require travel medical insurance for everyone on the trip.
What we personally use and recommend:
Auto Insurance: Baja Bound — quick, easy, and made for Baja road trips.
Travel Medical Insurance: SafetyWing — covers you when life throws surprises your way.
Think of it as your adventure safety net: you’ll probably never need it… but if you do, you’ll be very glad you have it.
What do I do about money?
Baja is big on cash, specifically pesos. We recommend bringing a bank card that allows for ATM withdrawals in foreign countries. There's also a great currency exchange spot right on the border if you want to trade in some USD at a good rate.
Will I make friends for life?
Almost guaranteed. Something about Baja’s beaches, long drives, and shared “did that just happen?” moments turns a group of strangers into a crew that stays in touch long after the trip. You might come for the adventure… but you’ll leave with people who feel like they’ve always been part of your story.
I'm a big drinker and partier... is this trip for me?
Probably not, and that's totally okay. There are plenty of great trips built around beach bars and late nights. This just isn't one of them.
At Baja Good, we're chasing empty beaches, sunrise coffees, glassy paddle board sessions, scenic hikes, winding dirt roads, and the kind of sunsets that make you forget to check your phone. Our community is full of nature lovers, active adventurers, and curious humans who'd rather swap stories around the campfire than close down a bar.
Don't get us wrong, some cold cervezas or margaritas by the fire are always welcome. But getting drunk isn't really our vibe. After a few days of salty air, sunshine, and full adventure days, you'll be tucked into bed before you know it... ready to catch another unreal sunrise the next morning.
And since we're living and camping together in close quarters, smoking isn't so bienvenido on our expeditions. We like our campfires smelling like mesquite, not cigarettes.
Will I need a vacation from my vacation?
Nope. Our trips are about slowing down, not rushing. You’ll go home sun-kissed, salty-haired, and already planning your next Baja run.
Can I bring my kids?
We love kids, but this trip isn’t designed for them. Baja Good is rugged, remote, and runs on an adult pace. A handful of long driving days, off-grid camping, and the unknowns that come with any remote adventure don’t always mix well with little ones.
Do you give back to the communities you travel through?
We do. Baja isn’t just a backdrop for adventure — it’s home to amazing people (and a lot of dogs). We donate 3% of our revenue to local dog rescue organizations along the peninsula. So every mile you drive with us helps a pup find food, shelter, or a forever home. Adventure + wagging tails = a pretty good trip, if you ask us.
can i just stay in mexico after the trip?
Absolutely! You don’t have to follow us back north (but you may miss a lot of fun with your new friends!). A lot of people fall in love with Baja and decide to stay forever, and others decide to venture further south and take the ferry to "mainland Mexico", eventually driving all the way down to Argentina (like we did). If that’s you, we’ll happily help you figure out the logistics at no extra charge.
How do payments work? Is the deposit refundable?
To reserve your spot, you’ll put down a $750 non-refundable deposit. You can pay this securely through our payment processor, Wave, which accepts credit cards, debit cards, and bank transfers. We can also take payments via Venmo, Zelle, Wise, Stripe, or a good old-fashioned wire.
If you book inside 60 days of departure, the full balance is due at checkout (again, through Wave).
What if I Need to cancel?
We get it — plans change. Here’s the deal:
61+ days before your trip:
Your $750 deposit is non-refundable, but we’ll let you roll it over to another expedition if there’s space. Heads up though: your early bird discount won’t roll with it — that’s only for folks who stick with their original plan.
60 days out:
That’s when the balance is due. If you have already paid a deposit but haven’t paid the remaining balance, you’ll lose your spot. If you have paid, congrats — you’re officially locked in at the rate you booked.
Inside 60 days:
By this point we’ve already lined up permits, meals, and whale tours… so payments are non-refundable. If life throws you a curveball, we’ll do our best to help you rebook at a discount on a future trip, but no promises.
If we cancel (rare, but hey, Baja’s wild):
You get a 100% refund, or you can roll everything to another expedition. Your call.
Do you offer any discounts?
Yep! We've already built credit card fees into our pricing, so you can book with your card without paying anything extra.
Want to squeeze a few more tacos out of your budget? Here's how:
🌵 Early Bird: Save $200 by booking early.
🚐 Alumni: Been on a Baja Good expedition before? Enjoy $200 off your next one.
💸 Zelle or Venmo: Save an extra $50 when you pay by Zelle or Venmo instead of credit card.
If you're not sure what you qualify for, just shoot us a message. We'll get you the best deal we can.
Why do passengers cost less than drivers?
Great question. Our pricing is built to be fair whether you’re adventuring solo or rolling with a co-pilot:
Drivers pay the base rate because they bring the vehicle, handle the rig, and take up a full “spot” in the caravan.
Passengers pay less since they’re sharing the same rig — but we still cover their included meals, campground fees, whale tours, and all the good stuff.
I'm Canadian. Can I pay in CAD?
Absolutely. If paying in Canadian dollars is easier, just let us know.
We can work with Wise or Stripe to make the payment process as simple as possible. Send us a message and we'll find the option that works best for you. We're all about minimizing bank and processing fees as much as possible!
What if I have more questions?
We’ve got you covered. Before the trip, you’ll get a detailed PDF with everything you need to know — and probably a few things you didn’t even think to ask. Still curious? You can email us, send a WhatsApp message anytime, or even hop on a quick call. We also set up a private WhatsApp group for each expedition so everyone can swap info, stay in sync on the road, and keep the memories (and inside jokes) alive long after the adventure ends.
